A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” stated the country's president.
The official confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his government's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in national projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, beating predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked significant questions over construction quality.
